Microneedling Q&A

Are microdermabrasion and microneedling the same thing?

Microdermabrasion and microneedling both improve the appearance and texture of your skin, but they do it in different ways.

Microdermabrasion

During microdermabrasion, your provider uses a handheld device with a rough edge to exfoliate the top layer of your skin. This removes old, dead skin cells and reveals newer, healthier skin underneath.

Microneedling

During microneedling, your provider uses a handheld device with very thin needles to make small puncture wounds on your skin. These wounds spur your body’s healing process and encourage the production of collagen and elastin –– proteins that keep your skin firm, smooth, and supple.

What types of skin problems can microneedling treat?

The Family Health & Wellness Center by Dr. Singh team uses microneedling to treat various skin problems, including:

  • Enlarged pores
  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Acne scars
  • Skin discoloration
  • Stretch marks
  • Loose skin

Sometimes, microneedling is used to treat specific medical conditions, like alopecia areata (hair loss caused by an autoimmune disease) and hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating).

What does microneedling involve?

Microneedling takes 15 minutes to a few hours, depending on the area of your body treated.

At the beginning of treatment, your provider cleans your skin and applies a topical anesthetic to ensure your comfort. Then, they use a handheld roller or another similar device to make a series of tiny puncture wounds on your skin. The punctures spur your body’s healing process, increasing blood flow to the treatment site and promoting new collagen and elastin.

Your provider might use different-sized needles, depending on the skin concerns treated. For instance, longer needles may be necessary to treat deep scars that extend beneath your skin’s surface.

What is recovery like after microneedling?

Microneedling is an outpatient procedure, so you go home immediately after treatment. It’s normal to have red, swollen skin for the first few days. You can apply an ice pack to the affected areas to reduce swelling and pain.

Will I need more than one microneedling treatment?

Microneedling is safe and effective, but it typically takes multiple treatments to achieve your desired results. The team at Family Health & Wellness Center by Dr. Singh usually recommends a series of microneedling sessions spaced three to eight weeks apart. If you want to maintain your results, you might need annual touch-ups afterward.
