Immigration Physicals Q&A

What is an immigration physical?

For those hoping to immigrate to the United States or obtain a Green Card once there, obtaining an immigration medical examination is an important part of the process. It must be fully completed before your application is processed or approved.

The immigration physical is a comprehensive medical examination that determines if there are any medical reasons that make your application inadmissible.

This physical examination must be completed by a doctor who is approved by either the US Consulate that you use or by the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).

The team at Family Health & Wellness Center by Dr. Singh is fully licensed to carry out this exam, and they are committed to doing so in a compassionate and supportive manner.

What is the purpose of an immigration physical?

The immigration physical ensures that those seeking to live in the United States do not have any diseases or health conditions that threaten the nation’s public health. It can be thought of as a screening exam as opposed to a full consultation with a medical doctor.

The physician who performs your exam may not diagnose or treat any conditions they find. As such, it shouldn’t take the place of a normal physical exam.

There is a wide range of conditions that could lead to you being designated as inadmissible on medical grounds, including:

  • Tuberculosis
  • Hansen’s disease
  • Gonorrhea
  • Cholera
  • Plague
  • Smallpox
  • Yellow fever

This is only a partial list. Consult with your doctor at Family Health & Wellness Center by Dr. Singh if you have questions regarding specific conditions that pertain to your situation.

What can I expect at my appointment?

Properly preparing for your appointment is very important to ensure that your doctor accurately completes the examination. The US Department of State has a comprehensive list of documents and materials to bring to the examination, including:

  • Your passport, identity card, laissez-passer, or travel document
  • Your vaccination records
  • Your immunization records
  • Your previous chest X-rays
  • Copies of your medical history records

During the appointment, your doctor carefully reviews your medical history and immunization records to ensure that you don’t have any conditions that pose a public health threat.

They also conduct a thorough physical examination, as well as a chest X-ray. Certain blood tests are conducted to screen for additional diseases.

Following your appointment, your provider will provide Form I-693, which is required in order for your immigration application to be processed.
