Diabetes Management Q&A

What is diabetes management?

Diabetes management at the Family Health & Wellness Center by Dr. Singh involves medical monitoring to ensure your diabetes treatment works effectively. If you haven’t been diagnosed with diabetes but have symptoms of the disease (e.g., frequent urination, increased thirst, fatigue, weakness, slow-healing sores, or losing weight without trying), see the team for an evaluation.

What are the risk factors for diabetes?

Diabetes risk factors include both genetic components and your environment (lifestyle choices).

Type 1 diabetes typically appears during childhood, when the body doesn’t make enough insulin to properly manage blood sugar.

Type 2 diabetes (not responding to insulin properly) often develops over age 40. Its risk factors include being overweight, poor nutritional habits, and insufficient exercise.

Is diabetes management right for me?

Anyone with diabetes, prediabetes, or who suspects they have diabetes is a candidate for diabetes management at Family Health & Wellness Center by Dr. Singh. Your provider discusses your symptoms and medical history, completes a physical exam, and orders blood tests to evaluate your blood sugar levels. You may also need an electrocardiogram (EKG) to evaluate your heart function.

When not managed properly, diabetes can cause nerve damage, heart and kidney issues, eye damage, foot problems, skin conditions, and even dementia. It may also lead to depression.

What does diabetes management include?

For diabetics, managing blood sugar consists of making lifestyle changes and taking diabetes medication if necessary.

Government-contracted diabetes management programs require you to see a specialist, nutritionist, and physician all at once.

You might make simple changes to your diet and exercise regimens, such as eating more plant-based foods and exercising daily. If you carry excess body weight, the Family Health & Wellness Center by Dr. Singh team offers customized, medically supervised weight loss solutions.

Your provider may alter your diabetes medications to keep your blood sugar within a stable range. Follow up with them as often as needed to ensure superior results and optimal blood sugar control.

Can I prevent diabetes?

Type 2 diabetes is often preventable by eating nutritious foods, getting regular exercise, and maintaining an ideal body weight. If you develop prediabetes, a condition that develops before diabetes, you can typically reverse it by losing weight. You also need to properly manage high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and other chronic conditions. You should also avoid smoking and excessive alcohol consumption.
